Romit coordinates Beginners Japanese, as well as Japanese Studies units, "Japan in Changing Asia," "Shifting Identities in Contemporary Japan" and "Tensions and Contradictions in Japanese Culture and Society". He also teaches in "Popular Culture in Asia".
His research interests include popular and youth culture in Japan; construction of genders and sexualities (in particular, masculinities) in Japan and Asia; negotiations of 'minority' and 'in-between' identities. He is currently completing a PhD on masculinity in the corporate sector in Japan. His publications include "Performing Masculinities? The 'Salaryman' at Work and Play," Japanese Studies, 20 (2), 2000: 189-200; "Cybermasculinities: Masculine Identities And The Internet In Japan" in Cybercultures in Japan, eds. Nanette Gottlieb and Mark McLelland, Routledge (forthcoming, February 2003); and "Creating Corporate Warriors" in East Asian Masculinities: The Meaning and Practice of Manhood in China and Japan, eds. Kam Louie and Morris Low, Routledge/Curzon (forthcoming, 2003). He has also written entries on aspects of Japanese corporate culture for The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Japanese Culture, ed. Sandra Buckley ,Routledge (2002), and book reviews in journals such as Journal of Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, the online journal, Intersections, and Journal of Asian Studies (forthcoming).
