Research Interests

  • China—contemporary Chinese culture and media

Wang Yi coordinates and teaches Chinese language units at beginners, advanced and specialist levels. Wang Yi was awarded a PhD in Chinese Studies by Murdoch University, Perth in 1997. The title of her thesis was "From Revolution Culture to Popular Culture: Literature and Television Drama in China, 1987-1991". Her areas of research interest are media and popular culture in contemporary China. Dr Wang Yi's current research project is titled "Globalisation: Media and Peasants in China".

Her co-edited book, titled Popular Cultural Studies, Wang Yi and Lu Yang (eds), Shanghai: Shanghai Sanlian Press, 2001, was recently published, and included one chapter by Wang Yi on "Terminology of Cultural Studies" (pp.273-295). Other book chapters include "Encoding/Decoding and the Ethnographic Audience Study," "Public Sphere and Media," and "Cultural Economy and the Resistance Theory," all in Popular Culture and Mass Media, Shanghai: Shanghai Sam Lian Press, 2000.
