Aims

This symposium aims to improve Australian and international understanding of pesantren, madrasah and Islamic secondary education in Indonesia generally. It aims to advance public and academic knowledge of Indonesian Islam and the diversity of Islamic education in Indonesia. Participants in the Symposium will explore the inside workings of Islamic schools – their curricula, pedagogies, everyday life, student catchment, etc. The symposium is organized under the aegis of an ARC-funded project, “Ambivalent Adolescents in Indonesia”, which seeks to develop comparative knowledge about adolescence in Indonesian society.

Two Keynote Speakers, Professor Nasaruddin Umar and Mr. Robert Kingham, scholars, postgraduate students and practitioners will present papers at the Symposium and there will be discussion after each paper. Papers will later be considered for publication.

Objectives

• to improve Australian and international public perception of pesantren, madrasah and Islamic secondary education generally

• to enhance academic knowledge about the diversity of pesantren education

• to improve academic knowledge of the inside workings of pesantren – their curricula, pedagogies, everyday life, student catchment, etc.

• to disseminate this knowledge in the form of publication/s and media releases

• to advance knowledge of Indonesian Islam

• to provide comparative knowledge relevant for understanding the nature of Islamic education in Australia

Outcomes

• Dissemination of knowledge about Islamic education in Indonesia in the form of publication/s and media releases

• Development of a research network of people involved with pesantren

• Identification of strategic areas for further research into Islamic education in Indonesia and the region

There is pay parking for visitors to the University next to the University Club in Car Park 3 (entrance off Hackett Drive).

Registration and Cost

All participants must register with Ms Claire Harding (hardic01@student.uwa.edu.au) by 5pm Tuesday 24th October 2006 for catering purposes.
The cost of each day's attendance will be $25. Please pay in cash. This will cover morning and afternoon tea and lunch; if you are coming on both days please pay $50 the first morning. If you are attending the Postgraduate Workshop please pay $75 the first morning.
