ASAA Conference Panel on Indonesian Youth Today (July 2006)

Background of the Panel

This panel examined the lives and identities of Indonesian youth and adolescents, with particular focus on the body, sexuality and gender.

Young people in Indonesia are spearheading, and having to cope with, issues such as:

• dramatic social change, including democratization and decentralization
• the globalization of media and knowledge
• economic insecurity and difficult economic times
  
• rising Islamic fundamentalism

This panel explored how young people are experiencing this social transformation, particularly through their bodies.
