Ambivalent Adolescents in Indonesia

Adolescents embody the currents of social change in contemporary Indonesia. They have been significant agents of social protest leading to social and political transformation. However, this important group is virtually un-studied.

Our research team, building on their fieldwork experience in different regions of Indonesia, will conduct the first comprehensive study of adolescents in Indonesia. We will explore adolescent experience of:

  • education
  • religious, cultural and national identity
  • the body and sexuality
  • parents and family
  • social life
  • popular culture
  • work.

We will investigate how adolescents contribute to modern Indonesia and provide fresh perspectives on the cross-cultural study of gendered adolescence.

This is a major research project funded by an Australia Research Council Discovery Grant.
